| Local Government Week - 2010 |
|
Local Government Week is being celebrated in 43 Local Authorities in the Eastern Province for the period of 1 week from July, 12, 2010 to July, 18, 2010 under the guidance of the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils and the Department of Local Government, Eastern Province with the assistance of the Regional Assistant Commissioner of Local Government Offices – Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.

Mission |
To support and strengthen the process of democratic decentralization in the Eastern Province by developing the capacity of Local Government to invest in widely distributed and simple forms of public service accessible to the vast majority of citizens.

| Key Functions |
|
| 1. |
Monitoring and supervising the administration of the Local Authorities in Eastern Province with the assistance of 03 Regional Assistance Commissioners.
|
|
| 2. |
Assisting Local Authorities towards Provision and Maintenance of services and amenities to the residents of the area by means of grants to supplement their resources.
|
| 3. |
Mobilizing resources required for Provincial Administration. |
| 4. |
Assisting Local Authorities in their infrastructure and development work by Grants.
|
| 5. |
Counseling and guiding the elected representatives and staffs of the local Authorities on constitutional administrative and financial matters.
|
| 6. |
Providing training and research in Local Government.
|
| 7. |
Administered in District level by three (03) Regional Assistant Commissioner of Local Government.
