The Re-Settlement Process of IDP’s

A meeting was chaired by Hon.
Mohan Wijewickrama, Governor-Eastern Province, today 23rd January
2008. This meeting was attended by Secretary to the Ministry of Re settlement and Disaster Relief Services
Mr. ACM Rasik, Chief Secretary Eastern Province Mr. Gamini Rodrigo, Secretary
to Hon. Governor Patrick Jayasinghe, Secretaries of the Provincial Council and
Government Agent Trincomalee Major General TTR de Silva, Coordinator for
Resettlement and Disaster Relief Ministry Rear Admiral HR Amaraweera and Senior
Officers of the SLA, SLN and Police with Heads of Departments and District
Secretaries and Representatives from Ceylon Electricity Board to Map out the
Strategy to speed up the re-settlement of IDP’s from Trincomalee presently in
Batticaloa and Amparai District.
Whilst the recent rains had
hampered the process, it was decided to complete resettlement in Amman Nagar,
Muthur Division by 30th January 2008 and also to ensure that the
IDP’s are provided with necessary relief items and other livelihood support.
Hon. Governor directed that the schools in the area to be repaired and reopened
with adequate education facilities and teachers. Resettlements in all areas
have been planned within a specific period, and in most areas it will be
completed by mid March. Hon Governor expressed satisfaction regarding the swift
action initiated to settle the IDP’s in Batticaloa District
