The
Provincial Department of Education was set up in April 1993. Till 1993 both
Policy Making and Implementation, were handled by the Ministry of Education,
Cultural Affairs, Sports and Youth Affairs. After the setting up of the
Provincial Department of Education, Policy decisions are being made by the
Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs, Sports and Youth Affairs and the
implementation of the policies are being executed by the Provincial Department
of Education,

structure of the Provincial Education Administration was re-organized in the

2006 schools in NEP as at 31.12.2004 with different grades and sizes. There are
125 schools of 1 AB Grade, 263 schools 1 C grade, 653 schools of II grade and
965 schools of III grade in the North East Province. There are 38 National
Schools, which came under the purview of the Line Ministry. There are 6 Private
Schools too. The student population is about 627,968 and there is an approved
cadre of 25,728 personnel as Teachers and Principals under the purview of the
Ministry of Education,

The thrust areas of the Education Sector for Development are many. The implementing agencies of the various thrust areas are the separate units in the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Department of Education.
