Sheep farming is a popular economic livestock activity in tropical countries but it is not a familiar livestock livelihood activity in the Eastern Province. Low quality feed utilization ability and grazing ability of the sheep has encouraged the Department of Animal Production and Health to introduce sheep farming project in 2019 under PSDG.

Five farmers in Muthur division were selected of this pilot project. 2 female and 1 male sheep worth of Rs.40,000/= have been issued to each farmer. Monitoring noticed that weight gain, kids born and some are pregnant at the time of visit. This is an economically sound project and farmers satisfaction also high due to easy maintenance, easy feeding, less labour intensive, disease resistance and good market. All the beneficiary farmers are willing to expand their sheep farming because of the viable economic impact.
