In respond to the request from Hon Governor -Eastern province the Department of Animal Production and Health have issued 20,000 month old backyard unsexed chicks produced from regional livestock farm-Uppuveli to the rural farmers in three districts under 50% subsidies to Enhancement of rural farm income through backyard poultry rearing. This short term plan has been implemented while adhering to Covid-19 precautionary guidelines, lockdown and curfew. Poultry rearing is not only enhancing the income but also it is a good nutritious food source during food scarcity period.

Department of Animal Production and Health, Eastern Province is presently organizing “Rabies Awareness Week” from 29^th October to 2^nd November 2018 in various parts of Eastern Province. Dog sterilization as well as rabies control activities are planned to be held during the course of this week in collaboration with the Department of Health and Department of Local Government, Eastern Province
